BREAKDOWN MAINTENANCE
In spite of regular preventive maintenance, repairs / maintenance is done
whenever there is a defect in the machine or equipment.
This is called Breakdown maintenance.
Activities performed during breakdown maintenance :
The following activities are performed during breakdown maintenance.
(1) Locating problem
(2) Trouble shooting
(3) Repairing
(4) Replacement of damaged items
(5) Recommissioning of equipment equipment
(1) LOCATING PROBLEM :
Whenever there is a defect in the equipment or the equipment stops working (breakdown),
the supply to the equipment should be stopped first.
The problem that then arises is determined by where the equipment originated.
This is important because after the location of the problem has been determined,
another reason etc. can be done to find the cause and prevent it.
(2) TROUBLE SHOOTING :
Once the location of the problem is determined, the important step is troubleshooting.
This requires a logical approach, as there can be more than one cause for a problem.
For example, if an induction motor stops working, the reasons may be lack of supply,
blown fuse, overload relay trip of starter, open circuit in the wire from starter to motor, etc.
Thus, one of the possible causes of the problem is checked for one cause and the exact cause is found.
(3) REPAIRING :
During trouble shooting, it is known which part of the problem has arisen.
So the necessary documentation of that part is done.
(4) REPLACEMENT OF DAMAGED ITEMS :
Often repair of damaged parts is not possible.
In such circumstances it is necessary to replace the damaged part.
For this the damaged part is carefully removed and replaced with a new one.
(5) RECOMMISSIONING OF EQUIPMENT :
Equipment is restarted after repairing or replacing old parts with new ones.
For this all the precautions to be taken before commissioning are taken.

Inspection :-
Inspection plays an important role for maintenance work.
It is therefore imperative that the inspection be carried out by an experienced and
senior person in the maintenance work.
The Inspection can be mainly divided into four sections.
[1] Sensory inspection
[2] Study of log records
[3] Electrical test
[4] Mechanical test
