The major difference between Soft starter & Vfd ( Variable frequency drive ) for Motor as bellow :
Vfd ( Variable frequency drive ) is one types of Soft starter but we read & more knowledge about of a difference between then.
- Soft starter is used to smoothly start and stop of the motor., without jerk load.
- The starting torque delivering capacity of the soft starter is poor as V/f ratio or the flux is much lower than the rated capacity of the motor flux. It is suitable for the driven equipment which start at almost no load.
VFD is also soft start and soft stop the motor.
- However, VFD delivers constant torque equal to the rated torque of the motor.
- This is achieved by maintaining v/f ratio constant. In addition, VFD is used for the applications for which speed control is required. VFD is used for fan and pump applications, and it saves the energy.

Variable frequency drives (VFDs), also known as an AC drives, inverters, and adjustable frequency drives (AFDs), are adjustable speed drives that can be used to control AC induction motors.
A VFD is used to adjust motor speed and ( HP ) horsepower by varying frequency and voltage.
This adjustability allows the motor speed to match the output requirements of the application.
VFDs are ideal for applications where process flowrate precision is critical.

VFD Mounting / Installation

VFDs can be mounted directly to the AC motor terminal box, wall mounted or mounted in a control panel.
- A parameter input controller and/or integrated LED display mounted on the front of the VFD makes programming and adjustability easy and user-friendly.
- VFD parameters can be saved to internal memory or exported to a PC for recall later.
- VFDs have the flexibility to communicate with other VFDs or control systems that communicate on a custom protocol network of your choice.
