A relay is an electrically switching through operated. It consists of a set of input terminals for a single or multiple control signals, and a set of operating contact terminals.

The switch may have any number of contacts in multiple contact forms, such as make contacts, break contacts, or combinations there of.

What is the use of relay?

Relays are generally used to switch smaller currents in a control circuit and do not usually control power consuming devices except for small motors and Solenoids that draw low amps.

What is the working principle of relay?

Relay works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When the electromagnet is applied with some current it induces a magnetic field around it.

Types of Relays

There are different types of relays like:

  • Electromagnetic Relays
  • Latching Relays
  • Electronic Relays
  • Non-Latching Relays
  • Reed Relays
  • High-Voltage Relays
  • Small Signal Relays
  • Time Delay Relays
  • Multi-Dimensional Relays
  • Thermal Relays
  • Differential Relays
  • Distance Relays
  • Automotive Relays
  • Frequency Relays
  • Polarized Relays
  • Rotary Relays
  • Sequence Relays
  • Moving Coil Relays
  • Buchholz Relays
  • Safety Relays
  • Supervision relays
  • Ground Fault Relays

All these and many other relays are classified based on their function, application type, configuration or structural features, etc.

Now, let us take a look at various types of relays, which are more popularly used in many applications.

How to work Relay ??

A relay is an electromagnetic switch operated by a relatively small electric current that can turn on or off a much larger electric current. The heart of a relay is an electromagnet (a coil of wire that becomes a temporary magnet when electricity flows through it).
